Why Praying Together Matters
Prayer was at the heart of the early church. In every season, whether they were waiting, celebrating, facing pressure or navigating change, God’s people gathered to pray.
Praying together unites us, strengthens our faith and helps us depend on God rather than ourselves. It is not simply something we do in a crisis, but a vital rhythm of church life as we seek God and trust Him to move.

Rediscovering the Power of Praying Together
In this standalone message, Martin unpacks the biblical importance of corporate prayer - the people of God praying together. While personal prayer is vital, Scripture overwhelmingly models the church coming together in unified, devoted prayer.
Drawing from Colossians 4:2 “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving”—Martin challenges us to make corporate prayer a regular rhythm, not just a response to crisis.
Don’t Lose Heart in Prayer
In this standalone message, Mike Betts explores Jesus’ call to “always pray and not lose heart”. Drawing from Luke 18, he shows that prayer is not about overcoming God’s reluctance, but trusting in the willingness of a loving Father who welcomes our prayers and invites us into relationship with Him.
With warmth and practical wisdom, Mike addresses the doubts and distractions that can weaken our prayer lives, encouraging us to find a rhythm that works, pray honestly and keep going, confident that even our simplest prayers matter to God.
Join us to pray
Saturday Morning Prayer
We meet every Saturday morning for an hour at 8am at The Hub to pray. We have a short time of worship together, where we enjoy Gods presence, this then naturally leads us to pray into the things God has put on our hearts.
Pre Service Prayer
Join us at 10am every Sunday morning and 6pm every Sunday evening, where we pray before our services start. We pray that God would move amongst us, lead us and speak to us as we corporately gather to worship Him.
Monthly Gatherings
We also have some location-based prayer meetings in Chartham and Sturry once a month. We use this time to gather to pray for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done in our local area. If you live in either Chartham or Sturry and would like to join, please contact info@thecitychurch.org.uk and we can then provide you further details. If you would like to start up a prayer gathering where you live, we’d love to hear from you and support you with this!
Week of Prayer
Twice a year as a church we set aside a week to focus on the Lord in prayer (once in January and once in September). We do this at the start of the year and at the start of the academic year as our way of saying to God that we need Him and depend on Him for all we do. During this week we will meet corporately, meet in small groups and pray individually (using a prayer guide) to seek God.
