One of the most important questions we can ask is, "How did we get here?" For many, the answer is simple: we used to believe God did it, but now we know science did it. You can't believe in both God and science. This idea has been loudly expressed by famous TV personalities and atheistic scientists, and has even become a popular bumper sticker.
But it raises some uncomfortable questions. Why are there planets, or physical laws, in the first place? How did life begin? Or consciousness? Why are so many scientists people of faith? Does science really rule out spirituality? Or can we have both?
Andrew Wilson has degrees from Cambridge and London, and has written for The Times and Christianity Magazine. He is also the author of Deluded by Dawkins?
