What is the Ministry?

A free and confidential service run by volunteers providing practical help and advice for East Kent residents struggling with personal debt.

What is the vision of the ministry?

Motivated by Christ's command and example, we seek to show his compassion for the poor and oppressed, to help them find release from the heavy yoke of debt and the resulting anxiety and helplessness, before it leads to stress, illness, marital breakdown, depression, and despair.  At an appropriate time we seek to share the gospel with them and invite them to church, believing that they need not just debt advice, but also a relationship with the Saviour Jesus Christ.

What does it look like on a week to week basis?

We have a telephone number with 24/7 answerphone, which we check regularly. Contacting clients to book them in for a one-hour appointment on a Wednesday evening at the church offices. The clients meet with a team of two CDAC advisors and we listen sympathetically, offer debt advice and in most cases prepare a financial statement for them and write to their creditors to negotiate affordable repayments. This often leads to an ongoing relationship with our clients involving regular appointments. In between appointments we prepare financial statements, correspond with their creditors, and manage their case generally.

What would be involved in serving in this area?

We would greatly appreciate new volunteers to offer a minimum of two Wednesday evenings a month. All necessary training is provided. Once people have experience, they can manage client casework, write letters to creditors and complete financial statements.
